Dracontia

Dracontia

Genus of orchids of approximately 20 species, formerly belonging to the genus Pleurothallis.

History:

This genus was proposed by Carlyle August Luer in 2004, when the genus Pleurothallis, proposed by him, was transferred to the subgenus of the same name.

Characteristics

It has a well-developed ramicaule, with a tubular sheath at half its height, and two or three more at the bottom, crowned by a barely visible ring.

Inflorescence

The flowering occurs from a spat on the cusp of the ramicaule, is racemosa with flowers opened simultaneously or successively. The lip is full of lateral lobes in vertical position with basal wings. The colume is short with a notch at the end that normally projects beyond the anterior cover.

Etymology

The name of the genus means "Dragon", because of the shape of its flowers.
